Love is the only gold

Former Ranger turned FBI agent Reed Acton faces his biggest challenge yet: a Christmas visit from partner Trent Copeland’s parents. He’s less equipped to handle hugs and holidays than the Taliban or international art thieves. When he’s assigned to track down a set of gold Babylonian artifacts looted from the Iraqi National Museum after the fall of Baghdad, things start to look up.

This time, Trent’s part of the mission, which takes them to exotic Istanbul. The crowded streets and labyrinthine markets fascinate Trent, but soon murder is on their trail. The investigation continues as Reed goes undercover at a US Army base, with Trent masquerading as his spouse. Surprisingly, fastidious and ever-fashionable Trent fits into base life right away and soon takes one of the suspects’ wives under his wing when domestic abuse rears its head.

Their faux marriage leads Reed to appreciate Trent in ways he never expected, strengthening their bond—until Reed has to confront the worst demons from his past: his relationship with his estranged family.

In Istanbul, a chauffeur-driven car dropped them in front of the Hotel Sultania, and a bellman brought their luggage inside to the registration desk.
“Richard Applegate. I have a booking for seven nights.” Reed identified himself with his undercover persona. Then he slid their passports and a credit card across the counter, and the clerk opened both passports, then started typing away at the computer.
“Welcome, Mr. Applegate and Mr. Carpenter. We are very glad for you to be staying here.” He squinted at the screen, then turned his gaze back to Reed. “There’s a package waiting for your arrival. Would you like me to send it up with your baggage, or will you take it now?”
“I’ll take it now.”
“Certainly.” The clerk finished the registration process, made three keys, which he handed to Reed, then proceeded to explain some of the hotel’s amenities. “Now, let me fetch that package for you.”
Reed collected a brown-paper-wrapped package the size of a shoebox from the clerk, and they headed for the elevator. In the spacious room, Trent discovered their luggage had already been brought up, and both suitcases were set up on luggage racks.
“Wow, check this place out!”
Reed sat on the bed and examined the package. Without looking up, he replied, “Trent, you read every single thing about this hotel online already and showed me four thousand photos. How can you still be so excited?”
Trent shrugged and pressed his lips together before answering. “It’s different in person. And why don’t you ever get excited about hotels and exotic destinations?”
“Because I’m working. This isn’t my vacation.”
Trent’s mood plummeted, and he sat next to Reed on the burgundy-and-gold brocade bedspread. “I forgot. Don’t you at least have today off?”
Reed looked up from unwrapping the package. “Not really. I need to identify and attempt to make contact with the dealers who worked with Matthews and Granby. If they sell their inventory to someone else, we may never catch them.”
“I get it. So what’s in that package?” Trent had watched Reed examine it from all sides before untaping one end and carefully peeling back the brown paper. “Who’s it from?”
“A friend at the tourist office.”
“Oh.” Trent’s eyebrows rose of their own accord. “Tourist office” was their code word for the US consulate here in Istanbul. Reed was worried any room could be bugged, so he’d schooled Trent on a whole list of code words. Trent had added a few of his own, including “It’s hot in here” for “I love you” in case whoever was listening might be offended.
“Trent, if someone bugs our room, I doubt our relationship is going to make any difference to them or whatever they’re planning.”

About the author:
EM Lynley writes sizzling gay romance with a hint of mystery. She loves books where the hero gets the guy and the loving is 11 on a scale of 10. A Rainbow Award winner and EPIC finalist, EM has worked in high finance, high tech, and in the wine industry, though she'd rather be writing hot, romantic man-on-man action. She spent 10 years as an economist and financial analyst, including a year as a White House Staff Economist, but only because all the intern positions were filled. Tired of boring herself and others with dry business reports and articles, her creative muse is back and naughtier than ever. She has lived and worked in London, Tokyo and Washington, D.C., but the San Francisco Bay Area is home for now.
